What one real job search learned

Shortlist is built from months of a real, AI-assisted job search: hundreds of applications, cold emails and messages. What the numbers said:

≈360applications through job portals in one month. Almost no interviews.
17 of 18listings tagged "remote" or "worldwide" turned out to be locked to one country.
Hoursis how fast founders replied to short, specific emails from a real person.

The method, in five moves

The same five moves, every day. Shortlist does the slow parts and keeps you honest.

  1. Facts first

Write down only what is true about your work, with real numbers. Every CV and message is built from this list and nothing else.

  2. Strict gates

Skip jobs above your level or locked to places you cannot work. Read the one sentence that says who can apply. "Remote" alone means nothing.

  3. One CV per job

Two to five small edits so the posting's own words appear where they are true. Always one page. Never a skill you do not have.

  4. The double tap

After a strong application, send a short note to the person who hires: the founder, the manager, the recruiter. Only to an address they published.

  5. Write it down

Every application, note and reply goes in the log the moment it happens. You never apply twice, and you can see which channel brings replies.

Two ways to use it

For AI agents

The Shortlist skill

A folder of short, numbered steps that any AI agent can follow, even a small free model. Say "onboard me" once, then "gm" every morning: it finds jobs, checks each one, tailors your CV, drafts the note, logs everything, and sends you a ten-line report.

Works with Claude Code, Claude.ai, Codex, OpenCode, Gemini CLI, Cursor and Copilot. There is also a copy-and-paste version for any chatbot.

The CV builder

Build a one-page CV block by block, or paste a paragraph about your work and let your own free AI key draft it. Every drafted fact waits for you to confirm it. Download a real-text PDF that application systems can read.

Questions

Is it really free?

Yes. The CV builder runs in your browser, so there is nothing to host for you and nothing to charge for. If you use the AI draft, you use your own key. Google AI Studio and Groq both have free tiers.

Where is my CV stored?

In your own browser, on your device. Nothing is uploaded to us. Download a backup to move it to another device.

Will the AI make things up?

It is told not to, and Shortlist does not trust it anyway. Everything it drafts arrives marked "check this" and is left out of every download until you confirm it is true.

Will application systems read my PDF?

Yes. The PDF has real, selectable text in one column with a standard font, which is what applicant tracking systems read best. No tables, no text in images, no tricks.

Why one page?

A person decides in seconds whether to read on. One page with your strongest, truest lines does better than two pages of everything.

Does it work outside tech?

Yes. The method is the same for designers, nurses, teachers, analysts, support leads and engineers: find, check, tailor, reach a person, write it down.
